April 2006 Newsletter

I would like to thank all those who visited my website. I am very pleased to say that on the 3 weeks from the very first March newsletter notjusttreks.com received nearly 13,000 hits and nearly 9000 pages were surfed. Due to your kind investment of your precious time to look through my website, it appears on page 1 of Google and msn when typed Responsible adventures. I would like to request you to keep logging on to the website whenever possible as the more hits it gets, the higher the ranking on the search engines.

Despite the troubled times in Nepal, Responsible adventures takes off. A small group of 3 old friends came to climb Lobuche 6105m mountain situated in the Everest region for 2 weeks. It was Paul Weller’s 5th visit to Nepal and his 4th to the Everest region. Their plan to climb the mountain has to be cancelled as there was too much snow from a recent snow storm. They will be back within a couple of year’s time either to make another attempt on the same peak or perhaps another one.

While on the topic of climbing, the streets of Kathmandu were crawling with Westerners donning sponsored gear of their respective expeditions. The climbing season doesn’t seem to have suffered due to the negative publicity on the media.

A dear friend Frankie Francis from the 2003 50th anniversary Everest expedition of the Royal Marines and Royal Navy is back again to make another attempt on Everest from the West ridge which no British team has been successful. I guess due to the short transit in Nepal, we couldn’t catch up. If you would like to keep up with their progress their progress log on to http://notjusttreks.com/links/links.html

I made friends with another climber, Blair Fallahey from Australia who is also attempting Everest from the North side alone with the help of just 2 climbing Sherpas. He came to Nepal first with his dad to trek in the Everest region to acclimatize and show the region to his dad. He will be leaving for Tibet on the 5th of April. His previous attempts on 8000ers have been on Cho Oyu 8201m From the Tibet side a couple of years ago. He also attempted Lhotse from Nepal last year. Unfortunately he and his team had to abort the summit attempt due to the unusually bad weather, despite having extended their permit. If you are interested with how Blair is coping on the mountain on his own log on to
http://notjusttreks.com/links/links.html there are bound to be sensational photos as one of his sponsors is a magazine for whom he has to take photographs.

A quote from His Holiness the Dalai Lama from his recent visit to London;

‘It is fascinating in the West you have bigger homes yet smaller families; you have endless conveniences – yet you never seem to have time. You travel everywhere in the world, yet you don’t bother to cross the road to meet your neighbour's

I would appreciate it if you could give me the kind of words you would choose to search for trips like this on the internet.

sure you have been hearing terrible news about the political crisis in Nepal. It is all true if you happen to go to the so called 'hotspots'. The other day while the curfew was still on, I decided to visit a friend out of boredom. There was a group of ethnic people practicing archery near our flat, children were playing cricket on a school ground, people were walking, shops were open; all these within 10 minutes walk from the Headlines making places. In fact the place where the indiscriminate shootings took place was one of them.
